So I deleted AVG to see if that would do it...nope. I have my system running again immediately icons back, now running various virus checks with sophos and malwarebytes. Problem: Windows explorer was trying to mount these and map them, but timed out a dozen times or so, ending in amalfunctioningexplorer. So what i did, and probably the easiest fix i have ever done, was pop in the Windows 7 CD , booted from it , went to Repair My Computer , this content
